Due to the standardization of IoT technology with the introduction of the long-range wide-area network (LoRaWAN), a wireless and cost-effective collection method for sensor data is available. With just one IoT gateway, data can be collected from low-cost sensors within a radius of more than 1 km², which can be positioned virtually anywhere due to their battery operation. Very long battery lifetimes (typically ten years) ensure long-term, maintenance-free operation.
